Traveling north through Mississippi on Fat Tuesday, we searched for a good BBQ spot and found Leatha's for a late lunch. On the road to Birmingham, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi Leatha's BBQ has a well deserved four stars on the internet. It's a laid back, family owned restaurant with humble appeal. They were out of beef ribs, so we ordered rib eye steaks, cole slaw, fried potatoes, potato salad and baked beans. Deliciousness. I will go back. The photo is of Leatha's family. It hangs on the wall of the historic restaurant.

Green. That's a shocking color after all the grey and white of Alaska. I landed hard here in New Orleans. This next step in life is going to be my biggest challenge. I see what is ahead in mystic shapes and sacred omens. Honestly, I'm not sure Louisiana is the place for me, but Alaska isn't either. The rub is that I long for Alaska. It was wonderful to run in to so many Alaskans on my first night back in Nola. I guess we all wanted relief from the dark, frozen winter. Life seems harsh to me this morning and the soft edges come in small, poignant packages. A smile from a stranger, greens growing in a box, cats stretching and napping in the sun. Time marches on and waits for no one. I have been humbled by peoples kindness and their cruelty. I sit quietly among my mother's things and remember my family. A fractured tale of love and loss. Ghosts whirl around me and whisper, "All is well." A simple nod to my courage as tears fall. Not self piety, but a weary resolve. Love, GrandMa

September 11th, 2011I write this from the desk that my mother gave me. It sat in the front hall of our house in New Jersey for many years. Cherry wood with cubby holes, drawers and a key to a secret hiding place. It's taken a while to get the front three rooms of the house ready to place furniture. Last night was the first night I had a bedroom. I feel so blessed. The house will always be a Shot Gun Shack, but I begin to understand the history and the great aspects of a tiny, old house in a great city. I'm not sure what I'm doing here, but I know it's going to be good.

A few thoughts on traveling.

There’s a difference between a polite but firm request and a shrill demand. Where’s the line? Here are six things one should never do when you travel: I found these suggestions on the World Wide Web.

1. Threaten violence
Bad idea, and it usually has the opposite effect than the one you intended.

2. Yell
Raising your voice is almost never an effective way of getting what you want.

3. Have one too many
Alcohol and travel don’t mix. That’s definitely true if you’re driving, and almost always true when you’re flying.

4. Be inconsiderate of others
Selfish behavior gets you nowhere when you travel.

5. Leave your manners at home

Drove out to Ponchatoula yesterday. It was St. Patrick's Day. We cruised over the causeway and enjoyed the breeze off the lake. The sun was brilliant and I asked Uriah if he would drive me by a house in Gentilly that is for sale. Who knows? I might want to buy it. It was one of those wondrous days where all the stars lined up and I felt a presence of something greater than myself. The house is trashed, but there're bones beneath the rubble that sang to me. I'll go see it again and then I may bid on it. I'm frightened to make a commitment to this city that time forgot, but I realize that New Orleans needs good people as much as I need a place to be. New Orleans is a sacred, historic place. What happened to Alaska? It's still there, but the longer I'm away from the Great Land the more I realize that perhaps Alaska isn't for me. Did I actually write that? Alaska will always be a part of my story now. It's a wild tale with intense characters who dwell in a cold, beautiful place. Summer in Alaska. Winter in New Orleans? Wish me luck!

NOLA March 5, 2011

It's a cloudy and cool morning in New Orleans. The day begins still and quiet except for the song birds. I've been staying with Jeanine and Uriah from Astoria. They bought a house in the 7th Ward. I'm helping to paint the interior, while we drink and eat like Kings and Queens. The house is a Shot Gun style. New Orleans is in a state of transformation and I believe buying a home here is a good idea. The houses are cheap. Yes, it's the hood. Someone was murdered in front of the house two nights ago. Yes, it's a tough town, but where else can you get a house for so little and still be in a cultural mecca? It's a great city and owning a small piece of it is treasure. I will see how it plays out. It's fun to look at houses.

Denver The Mile High City

I'm in Denver with my daughter Iris, her husband Scott and my Grandson Jackson. The Mile High City is lovely. I feel fortunate to have such a happy daughter. She's working hard to keep it all going here. The city is alive and seems barely touched by the recession. Portland and Astoria, Oregon seem much harder hit. I'm blessed to have two wonderful children who love me and their families.

Road To Denver

Today I fly to Denver.
Oregon was as beautiful as ever.
My friends and family have taken hits.
People are wondering which way to go.
The word in the air is change.

Astoria

Walking the streets of Astoria, Oregon I'm homesick.
I miss Alaska, but this place is equally as fascinating.
Friends and stories fill the days and bounty reigns.
The lifestyle of our tribe is exalted.
Gracious thanks all round for conjuring up this bliss.
We plan and discuss the magic we're all performing.
Each and every person I meet is a gem.
The rainbow over the Columbia River this morning sealed it.

Tonight I'm in love with Alaska.
My guitar player and I drove south to Indian.
Sara at the Brown Bear cooked us burgers.
We watched sunset over Turnagain Arm.
After lunch there was no where to go but bed.
On my clean white sheets, death and I made a pact.
He was busy collecting souls
while I dreamt of dogs that don't bite.
I make him smile so he lets me live.

A Fortuna A Persona (A poem for Guanajuato)

Dogs bark and speak Spanish here. The morning air of Guanajuato tells a simple story. The cries of people making a living. Roosters crow and birds of an exotic form fly by and there’s storytellers all around me. Eyes meet and rest for a moment on smiles of a beloved. Silently speaking to me and sharing love. It's a miracle and I want to do sweet things. There's nothing else. Breezes flutter and the church bells ring of time. There is a code I do not know, but I trust and listen for what is understood. Courtesy is an unspoken song. When we see in each other’s eyes, it's trust and living wisdom that holds water and shines out. Oh Guanajuato! It's a humorous trail on alleys and through tunnels cut in to mountains filled with treasure. How will I leave? I feel impelled to tell the story. Is it not enough to experience life? The doors rattle and wind curls up my legs and promptly announces, "It's time to sing! It's time to write!" Comprende, yo comprende mi Amor.

I'm almost ready to travel south.
Getting a perspective is always a smart plan.
Things are changing and I'm thrilled with all the aspects.
When I drove to Alaska a few years back, I spotted a Lynx.
It quickly got out of my sight, but it made an impression.
This photo shows the beauty and mystery of these wild cats.
I don't want to leave Alaska, but I will be back.
